How to Clean and Store Your Dildo

Purchased your first dildo? Or simply expanding your collection with some new material options. Adding new toys to your collection is an exciting time, but it’s important to think about the materials you have purchased. Not all dildos are the same, and different materials need different care and attention.

If you’ve recently added to your collection, the first thing you need to do is check the instructions to see what care advice they offer. But since most people tear through the packaging to get to their exciting new toys, you’d be forgiven for missing this important information. Fear not, we’ve got some advice on cleaning and storing dildos of all materials below.

Glass dildos

These are made from reinforced and shatter-proof glass, so you can use them with confidence. They’re structurally similar to the material used in Pyrex dishes, so the good news is that you can pop them in the dishwasher to give them a good clean.

You can also clean your glass dildo with warm soapy water and finish with a spray of toy cleaner to keep them hygienic. This material won’t react with anything else in your toy drawer, but many people like to keep them separate by storing them in a soft pouch.

Rubber and jelly dildos

Although fun and squishy to play with, rubber and jelly dildos need a little bit of extra attention and care. This material is slightly porous, so bacteria can build up over time if they aren’t cleaned properly. They are also prone to small tears in the material which can lead to further bacteria buildup.

Using a condom with your rubber or jelly dildo will help to protect you from germs. You should also wash them thoroughly with hot soapy water and pay close attention to any grooves in the material. Jelly and rubber toys can react with other sex toy materials, so store this separately in a cool place out of direct sunlight.

How to Clean Real feel dildos

Real feel dildos

Real feel material is designed to replicate the plushy feeling of skin. They feel great right out of the packaging, but after the first use and wash, you might find that they lose their plushy feeling. To get this back, you’ll need to revive it with specialist powder.

Wash your real-feel dildo as you would with any other toy. Use warm, soapy water and pay close attention to any grooves or textures. Next, use the reviving powder included with your toy (or purchased separately) and sprinkle it all over. Store your real feel dildo in a soft pouch to keep it clean and hygienic.

Top tip, you can also use cornstarch as a simple way to revive your toy. Sprinkle it all over the toy and cover it with a condom to extend the life of your toy.

Metal dildos

These beautiful and stunning sex toys look like a work of art. The satisfying weight and cooling feeling also make them a tantalising choice. Since metal is non-porous and easy to maintain, all you need to do is wash your dildo in warm, soapy water. You can then spritz it with toy cleaner to ensure it’s extra hygienic.

Metal shouldn’t react with any other toy materials, but it’s a good idea to keep all of your toys in individual pouches so that they stay clean and free from dust. If you’re feeling daring, you could even display this one in your home as an erotic piece of art. You can use any lubricant with a metal dildo, including silicone and water-based.

Silicone dildos

This material is hard-wearing and long-lasting. It’s non-porous and very easy to keep clean. You can keep your silicone dildo clean by putting it in the dishwasher, boiling it or wiping it with toy cleaner.

Remember that silicone-based lube can cause the silicone to break down, so only use a silicone toy with water-based lube.

This material can also react with other toys, so it’s important to keep it separate. Storing all of your toys in individual pouches will help to keep them safe, clean and ready for action.

When to replace a toy

Knowing when it’s time to replace a toy is essential. Continuing to use a toy that is damaged or broken can lead to bacterial infections in places where you don’t want bacterial infections. If your toy is cracked or broken, or the material appears to be wearing down, it might be time to replace the toy. In the case of a glass or metal dildo, breaks and cracks could lead to injury, so you should stop using it immediately.

By cleaning and storing your toys correctly, you can extend the life of your sex toys and keep them safe and hygienic for longer. Shop our extensive collection of dildos if you’re ready to add something new to the collection.
