How to Spring Clean Your Toy Collection

April 16, 2020
By, laura

Earlier this month, we looked at how to spring clean your lingerie collection. We thought we should expand on this by moving focus to toy collections. Some toys are designed to last a long time, but nothing lasts forever. There comes a time in every toy’s life that you have to make some difficult decisions.

In this blog, we’ll look at some of the telltale signs you need to part with toys, how to safely dispose of them, and how to expand your collection when you’re done. Just call us the Marie Kondo of sex toys!

Do I need to spring clean my toy collection?

As we mentioned above, sex toys don’t last forever. While you might grow incredibly attached to your favourite bedroom companions, it’s important that you lookout for signs of wear and tear.

If you don’t care for your sex toys properly, they could become faulty and dangerous. And it’s not just the toys that use electricity that could become dangerous. If the materials in your sex toy are damaged in any way, this can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria.

So the short answer is yes, you do need to spring clean your toy collection now and then. And while it might mean you have to part with old faithful, it also means you have the perfect excuse to purchase some new toys to try out!

Top signs you need to replace your sex toys

  • You notice cracks, holes or openings in your sex toy that wasn’t there before. This can become a breeding ground for bacteria, so you should stop using these toys immediately.

  • The colour has started to fade. If the colour of your sex toy has changed, it’s a sign that the material has started to break down. When the material starts to erode, this creates fissures in the surface which are nearly impossible to hygienically clean.

  • The motor has a mind of its own. When you can’t take control over the sex toy, this is a sign that there is something wrong with the onboard electricals. This can leave you with a gentle purr rather than a deep rumble. While not really dangerous, it won’t be anywhere near as effective.

  • The shape has changed. If the shape of your sex toy has started to change, it’s a sign you should no longer be using it. This is another sign that the material has started to break down. Time to go shopping!

  • It won’t hold a charge. While not dangerous, there is nothing worse than a sex toy that lets you down without notice

  • It smells. It should go without saying that a sex toy that smells strange should be going straight in the bin. A bad smell is usually caused by bacteria, so you don’t want to put this anywhere near your delicate regions.

How to dispose of toys safely

If you feel bad about throwing your old sex toys in the bin, then you might be surprised to learn there are specialist recycling facilities available. Toys can either be sterilised and restored or the materials can be ground up and given a new lease of life as another product. Search for local sex toy recycling facilities in your area to find out more.

Variety is the spice of life

When you’ve removed the faulty items from your sex toy collection, what are you left with? If you’re not satisfied with your collection, this would be a great time to replace your favourite toys or try something new. You might soon discover that your old sex toys really didn’t get the job done as effectively as they could.
